How Luxus Started

THE HISTORY OF LEXUS

Lexus is the luxury vehicle division of the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. The brand was officially launched in 1989 with the introduction of the Lexus LS, a full-size luxury sedan. However, the history of Lexus goes back a bit further:

  1. Conception and Development (1983-1989): The idea for Lexus originated in the early 1980s when Toyota management decided to create a new luxury vehicle line to compete with established European and American luxury brands. This decision was driven by the success of the Toyota Camry in the U.S. market and a desire to expand into the premium automotive segment.
  2. Project F1 (Flagship One): The development of the first Lexus models, known as Project F1, began in 1983. Toyota aimed to create a flagship luxury sedan that would rival the best in the world. The project involved extensive research, testing, and attention to detail to ensure the highest level of quality and performance.
  3. Debut of the LS 400 (1989): The first Lexus model, the LS 400, made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 1989. The LS 400 was praised for its high-quality build, quiet ride, and advanced technology. It quickly gained a reputation for reliability and luxury, challenging established competitors.
  4. Expansion of the Lineup: Following the success of the LS 400, Lexus expanded its lineup to include other models. The ES 250, a mid-size luxury sedan, was introduced in 1989, followed by the first-generation GS and SC models.
  5. Global Expansion (1990s): Throughout the 1990s, Lexus expanded its presence globally, entering markets in Europe and Asia. The brand continued to receive acclaim for its commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and customer service.
  6. Innovations and Advancements: Lexus became known for introducing innovative technologies and features in its vehicles. The brand was at the forefront of hybrid technology with the launch of the RX 400h, the world’s first luxury hybrid SUV, in 2005.
  7. Performance and F Performance Brand: In the 21st century, Lexus began to emphasize performance with the introduction of the high-performance “F” models, such as the IS F and the LFA supercar. This marked a departure from the brand’s traditional emphasis on comfort and luxury.
  8. Contemporary Models: Lexus continues to offer a diverse range of luxury vehicles, including sedans, SUVs, coupes, and hybrids. The brand has maintained a reputation for reliability, quality, and innovation.
